While your teeth are very hard and durable, there are times when a hard fall, blow to the face or other oral accident, can actually impart enough force to fracture, crack or break a tooth. When this happens the damage commonly extends into the internal structures of the tooth causing pain.

In most cases like this, Sunshine Dental Group needs to perform a root canal in order to restore enough internal structure to the broken tooth, to later mount a crown.

The process begins by your Sunshine Dental Group dentist conducting a thorough examination of the tooth, and taking a few X-rays. This helps us to assess the extent of the damage.

The dentist will then remove all pertinent damaged structures and replace them with a material known as gutta percha. This will effectively form an abutment, to later anchor your crown.

Your dentist will then create an impression of the abutment, as well as the corresponding teeth. Then a temporary crown will be secured over the abutment to keep it safe. The impression is then sent off to a dental lab, that produces your permanent crown.

When your permanent crown is completed Sunshine Dental Group will call you back in for another appointment. You can expect this appointment to be brief. The temporary crown will be removed and your new crown will be cemented in place.

If you have a broken or damaged tooth you need to call Sunshine Dental Group at 626.579.4274 as soon as possible, to schedule an appointment.
