Braces can be tricky and inconvenient at times, especially while eating food, but we are here to help you know what to eat and what not to eat so you have the best possible experience with braces!

Throughout your treatment, there are some foods that would be best to avoid. This is because if you eat these foods, your brackets and wires can break, and there is a high chance that you would feel pain while you eat them. Some foods we suggest that you avoid include:

  • Caramel
  • Nuts
  • Gooey chocolate bars
  • Chunky peanut butter
  • Popcorn
  • Hard candies
  • Gum
  • Chewy candy, like taffy or gummy bears
  • Pretzels
  • Ice
  • Corn chips
  • Hard cookies or crackers

We also recommend being cautious when you eat the following foods. If possible, cut the food into small pieces and refrain from biting into it.

  • Raw vegetables
  • French/Italian bread
  • Corn on the cob
  • Meat
  • Fruit, especially apples
  • Burgers
  • Chewy bread
  • Pizza

Although we have given you lists of foods to avoid, we are happy to give you the following list of foods that are recommended while you have braces:

  • Hulless popcorn
  • Yogurt
  • Cheese
  • Soft or light crackers or cookies
  • Melons
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Grapes
  • Bananas
  • Peanut butter and jelly
  • Soup
  • Soft pastas, like ravioli, spaghetti, and macaroni and cheese
