Early orthodontic treatment is very beneficial, especially if you want your child to grow up with a beautiful, healthy, and functional smile!

The American Dental Association and the American Association of Orthodontists strongly recommend taking your child in for their first orthodontic appointment when they are 7 years old. If you do so, you will know if your child will need orthodontic treatment in the future. This appointment will give your orthodontist the chance to identify any problems that could result in the need for orthodontic treatment, and it could also help eliminate any habits that might cause development problems in the future, like thumb sucking and tongue thrusting.

If your child does indeed need orthodontic treatment, they will likely receive it between the ages of 9 and 14. Early treatment will give your child the best chance at obtaining a strong and healthy oral cavity because developmental problems are more easily solved when the smile is still growing. Treatment at older ages is still successful, but it might take longer than necessary and it may require more extensive work.

Early orthodontic treatment can also help with:

• Correcting bite problems, like open, deep, under, or over bites

• Guiding the growth of the jaw to accommodate emerging teeth

• Lowering the risk of damaging erupting teeth

• Improving your child’s appearance

• Alleviating more invasive dental corrections in the future

• Boosting self-esteem and confidence in your child
